    Chapter Commentary - XXX-Pressions

This category contains song quotes that can be used as "sound bite" expressions.

Music provides the opportunity to express different ideas, concepts, human emotions, and literature styles. Music can be used as a vehicle to convey different ideas and concepts that are social, political, educational, cultural, and religious in nature. In addition, it allows the opportunity to convey different human emotions, such as love, hope, charity, fear, anxiety, anger, frustration, rejection, despair, and primal. Finally, music provides the opportunity to convey different literature and lyrical styles, such as poetry, stories, humor, and satire.

Some people claim they never listen to the lyrics, while others listen intently. As they listen to lyrics, some words may be incoherent or misunderstood. Other listeners may not care to know what the words really mean or how they may impact society. Regardless, lyrics are important. They provide expression, communication, and entertainment. They are messages with the potential to be very powerful, and therefore, useful in making points in our daily discourse.

Just like all other forms of literature, expressions may be picked up from rock and roll songs for use in our daily discourse. For some reason, children appear to be very adept at picking up expressions and messages from songs. This category contains phrases with the potential to gain popularity as expressions in our everyday language.

Some of the more negative expressions are probably harmless in intent and even in nature, but when one totals all of them together, and considers that these songs are played repetitively via radio, TV, or within one’s own leisure (particularly in the presence of children), it raises issues that our society should take into consideration or at least made more aware of.

To some extent, most people are probably aware of the existence of negative lyrics and some of the impacts, however, some may not be aware of just how far this has permeated society (particularly as directed at children) and just how much it has spread (and growing in volume) over the last 10 to 20 years (crossing over into the mainstream over the last 10 years).

If one was to make a constructive suggestion toward what direction contemporary music should take and entertainment as a whole, it would be toward generating less negative material with the goal of meeting social and community responsibilities. It has been proven repeatedly over the years that high quality material can be generated without compromising and sterilizing the creativity process or the points the artists are trying to make.

In fact, it is widely recognized that an overwhelming majority of the greatest rock and roll songs ever do not employ negative gimmicks and rely on the creators brilliance and genius instead.
