Chapter Commentary - Politics, Hypocrites, and Lunatics

This category includes song quotes that refer to or make criticism regarding politics or the state of politics in the United States and elsewhere.

In general, there is a large inherent bias to the political left in the entertainment industry and media. However, regardless of people’s different political and social views or positions, making political and social commentary in entertainment is freedom of speech in the United States at its greatest glory.  Even in this day of age, there exist many countries that still do not have this basic freedom.

One would just hope these political and social activists back up their beliefs, slogans, and rhetoric by regularly practicing their right to vote.  Why is it so important to practice one’s right to vote and participate in the democratic process?

In addition, there appears to be a belief among some critics that making political or social commentary in the "arts" increases the "artistic merit" of a work, because it makes the piece more serious.  This is debatable because political and social commentary can add value or detract from the piece itself.  One really needs to examine it on a case by case basis.  But it is interesting to find how critics and entertainers tend to praise music and entertainment that they agree with politically and socially, and condemn those that are not within their narrow band width.  Are there ever situations in which entertainers and critics display intolerance, prejudice, narrow mindedness, and demonstrate an inability to be objective?  Can critics and entertainers take criticism?

However, one area of the media that it is not acceptable to bring personal bias into is the area of news reporting.  It is a disservice to the people of a free country to selectively censor the news to reflect personal views and agendas, as well as unethical and unprofessional.  Free thinking people should be provided all the correct facts and relevant perspectives to formulate their own opinions, not have it edited/censored by biased reporting.

Unfortunately, some journalists would rather selectively censor the news with their own personal opinions and agendas (i.e., editorialize), than do their professional duties of fact finding and news reporting.  In addition to editorializing/censoring news, there is growing concern over the proliferation of gutter journalism in the forms of tabloid gossip, unethical sensationalism, lazy research, supporting political/social agendas, and merging of so called "independent news" with entertainment conglomerates with conflicts of interest (i.e., plugging of  products, services, and propaganda), and other corporate conglomerate pressures to cut corners to increase profit margins.  How does this jeopardize the importance and need to give people the variety of information they need to make an informative and educated opinion?

If massive cynicism and distrust exists for our news agencies, media, entertainment, government, and society, then how does one rectify the situation?  How does one go about restoring trust and faith?  Why does everyone always blame the other person for the cause of problems, rather than looking internally for their own possible contributions or taking personal responsibility?
