Some believe Rock and Roll is an attitude and form of rebellion against authority, release of sexual energy/anxiety, or quest for identity. Yet it is more likely that rock and roll music is used as a tool toward achieving these objectives. The dispelling of these objectives lies within the individuals and in some cases their maturity level, but not in the music itself.
Others say Rock and Roll appeals to "primitive instincts" and is "evil." More likely, rock and roll music is amoral. That it is neither good nor bad (case in point, the rock and roll instrumental). Rock and Roll is just a form of musical expression, and is more or less, what the recording artist and the listener makes of it or reads into it. Yet, as illustrated in many of the quotes and categories of this reference book, some lyrics go beyond mere expression and advocate negative and destructive behavior.
Finally, some say that Rock and Roll, and music in general, is inspired by what is in our "hearts and souls." This may be the most disturbing theory, because this definition may lead one to conclude that the issue of negative lyrics is much larger than the confines of music.
One way that this theory can be tested is by looking at how much love we have inside our hearts and souls. In a world where we are coached by the media to pursue superficial and shallow ideals, it is easy to take our personally blessings for granted. One should feel blessed for having so much love in ours lives through family and friends. Some people believe that it is the extension of this type of love to others that is the only way to solve many of the problems facing society.
But love means different things to different people. Let us see what "Love Is" to certain rock and rollers.
